ELECTRONICS RECYCLING
What is Ecycling?
According to the EPA's website on Ecycling (www.epa.gov/ecycling), Computer monitors and older TV picture tubes contain an average of four pounds of lead and require special handling at the end of their lives. In addition to lead, electronics can contain chromium, cadmium, mercury, beryllium, nickel, zinc, and brominated flame retardants. When electronics are not disposed of or recycled properly, these toxic materials can present problems. [...] Safely recycling outdated electronics can promote the safe management of hazardous components and supports the recovery and reuse of valuable materials. These items clearly do not belong in Missouri's landfills. In addition, many corporations waste valuable space and expense storing these items.
In an unscientific CNN survey conducted online in the summer of 2004, 19% of the respondents acknowledged that they threw out their old computers and only 12% participated in a recycling program. Furthermore, while 35% gave their computers away, 28% of all computers are gathering dust.  This presents a huge opportunity to make an impact on our community and change this behavior.
Ecycling, therefore, is the recycling of electronic equipment for the purpose of refurbishment or demanufacture.

Benefits of Ecycling include:

Reduce the amount of toxics entering the waste stream (lead, mercury and arsenic)
Save landfill space
Conserve natural resources
Reduce the rate of electronic waste generated each year
